Children usually start on an alto saxophone. Most children can manage this size at around 9 years old. It is, however, very much dependant on the size of the child both in terms of how well they can manage the weight and whether their hands can reach around the keys.
As with other instruments that use a reed to produce the sound (such as the clarinet), the top teeth rest on the top of the mouthpiece and the lower lip curls over the bottom teeth resting against the reed. If your child has not yet lost their front teeth or is in the process of losing them, please get in touch to discuss playing a reed instrument.
The Trevor James Alphasax is a brilliant instrument which is lighter and has fewer keys than a standard sax, whilst still being a fully playable saxophone which can be used up to grade 3. This allows children who are slightly smaller to access this fantastic instrument. Once they have grown, they can then progress onto a standard alto saxophone.
The jSax opens up whole new opportunities for kids to take up the sax at an early age. It is an excellent beginners instrument that introduces younger children with smaller hands to the world of sax! The jSax is a great stepping stone to playing the standard instrument.
